Evolution or Revolution
Two words – evolution and revolution – have been tossed around the ice fishing community quite a bit concerning the drastic changes we have seen develop over the last 20 years. Webster lists them as nouns, but when they’re applied to ice fishing I think they act more like adjectives, as they aptly describe just what has been taking place.
One definition of evolution is “a process of continuous change from a lower, simpler or worse to a higher, more complex or better state.” Revolution has a definition listed as “a changeover in use or preference, especially in technology.” To paraphrase, I would say ice fishing is changing from simpler methods and equipment to a more complex and better state. This changeover is largely due to an increasing acceptance and preference for technology. Here is a quick rundown of some of the more innovative products available for use this season. It seems there are a handful of established companies that continue to lead the way, as well as a few newer arrivals with fresh ideas just to keep things interesting.
