June In the Grass
As we move through June, pheasants across the landscape are in the most important stage of the year. Hens are finishing up nesting and beginning incubation, with peak hatch typically occurring mid-month. Each hen lays a full clutch of eggs before settling in to incubate, and once hatching begins, chicks are on their feet within hours.
This time of year, is critical. While much of it happens out of sight, the conditions in the grass right now directly shape the fall population and the quality of hunting season ahead. So far, moisture and habitat conditions have been favorable, supporting strong insect life and nesting cover, both key ingredients for successful brood survival.
