Alternative Livebait Presentation

By Dennis Foster | May 1, 2014

Here in the Dakota’s (birthplace of the Bottom Bouncer) the vast majority of Walleye Angling is based on a Bouncer and livebait setup. Most folks turn to a Spinner Rig or Plain Snell/Bead or Float Combination. This is as easy as it gets and has taken an uncountable number of fish throughout the years.

Aggressive Tactics with a Subtle Twist

By Dennis Foster | May 1, 2014

As we progress into summer with the resulting warmer air and water temps, our previously quite predictable walleye’d friends become increasingly difficult to pattern. This is due to the fact that they have completed their spawning rituals and have gobbled up most everything edible in the nearby areas…and are now on the move to greener pastures.

Late Ice Foundation for Early Memories | By Andrew Johnson | Outdoor Forum

By Dennis Foster | March 28, 2014

Spring arrived in South Dakota March 20 in the form of a rare, but welcome, day of sunshine. And while the brief respite renewed hope that winter was nearly over, there was still plenty of ice on the area’s lakes for an ice-fishing adventure.

Late Ice is Great Ice | Outdoor Forum

By Dennis Foster | March 1, 2014

In my opinion, late ice offers the best opportunity to catch the biggest fish of the hard-water season. The end of winter means fish of all species will be sporting their plumpest figures of the year and be in a cooperative mood to boot. For this discussion, I will focus on top-of-the-line predators such as walleyes, pike, and both large and smallmouth bass.

Evolution or Revolution

By Dennis Foster | February 2, 2014

Two words – evolution and revolution – have been tossed around the ice fishing community quite a bit concerning the drastic changes we have seen develop over the last 20 years. Webster lists them as nouns, but when they’re applied to ice fishing I think they act more like adjectives, as they aptly describe just what has been taking place.

Pump it up for Panfish | Outdoor Forum

By Dennis Foster | August 13, 2013

We far too often view panfish as the babies of the piscatorial scene. Yes, they may be near the bottom of the food chain. But babies? I assure you they are not.

n the last few decades the ever-increasing presence of technology-specifically computer processors has changed every aspect of our lives. Even though for a lot of us, the pursuit of outdoor activities is used as an attempt to escape from the hassles and stress of the modern world, we simply cannot hide from it… no matter how hard we try.

Trolling Panfish | In-Fisherman | By Cory Schmidt with Dennis Foster

By Dennis Foster | June 1, 2013

I’ve been a fan of Patrick McManus’ witty word-smithing. Never sniff a gift fish, indeed. Or more to the point: Grab hold of unexpected gifts as they come, because, frankly, they come along darn seldom. Still, sometimes, it’s easy to take a boatload of bluegills for granted when you’d rather be hooking walleyes. This helps explain the situation that stirred an eventual realization: Trolling is an awfully potent way to catch panfish.
